When we first met Patricia and Eric on Zoom to discuss engagement and wedding photography, we noticed how cuddly Eric was to Patricia during the call. We almost never see this display of affection during a video chat and we knew immediately the engagement session would be easy and cute just from those few minutes of interaction. Of course they brought up the topic of not knowing how to pose for the camera, and also wanted to give us full discretion on how to setup and prepare them for the photos. We typically give them a range of options that we’re experienced with, and from that list it helps the couple narrow down what they want to pick for their aesthetic.
Patricia and Eric have a great fondness for Bryant Park because Eric proposed to Patricia there! We arrived first thing in the morning and it was a beautiful sunny day with nobody else in the area. We all had our coffee and were ready to rock and roll. It didn’t take a single moment before they got comfortable being themselves, showing affection and sharing laughter. All we did was tell them where to do it and started capturing their best moments.
Around the block from Bryant Park is the New York Public Library. Always a beautiful location to sit on the steps or even run up and down through the arches at the top. It’s a nice contrast against all the blue glass covered buildings surrounding it. It’s also a short walk from Grand Central Station. We really love the Pershing Square cafe right across the street from the station as a backdrop. Patricia’s yellow dress perfectly matched the yellow New York taxi cabs, so we made sure to include a few in the shots!
For the second location of the engagement session, Patricia and Eric wanted to use the park next to their apartment on the East Side, East Midtown Greenway. It’s a dedicated walkway built off the East River between FDR Drive. They were able to go back to their apartment to change to a more casual outfit, and we walked up the park towards the Red Sculpture. It resembles a portion of a roller coaster track supported by a bright red scaffolding. The overall color of the clear blue sky, the river, and all the buildings all contrasted very well with bright colored sculptures and outfits. We really love how the thick red lines really add pop to the photos too.
We finally ended the session when we found some cherry blossom trees on the sidewalk. We have camera tricks to help isolate just the two of them and the flowers, since it really doesn’t look that way in real life. Our years of experience with our equipment help us see the picture before we even take it, and to know which lens and settings to use to achieve that look. We had so much fun getting to know Patricia and Eric, which makes us even more excited for their New York City wedding this year!
